Victoria police have taken a second suspect into custody after two separate barricade incidents in the same suite at a Burnside Gorge Hotel Friday morning.
At 2 a.m. on Nov. 6, Victoria police were called to the 300-block of Gorge Road East for a report that a man had stolen a vehicle. When officers arrived on scene, they learned the man who owned the vehicle had tried to stop the theft and was assaulted by the person stealing the vehicle.
While trying to flee the scene, the suspect driving the car crashed into a hydro pole, causing significant damage. The owner of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The person who stole the vehicle then fled into a nearby multi-unit temporary housing facility in the 300-block of Gorge Road East, and barricaded himself within a suite. The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called to the scene, along with crisis negotiators, and they worked for several hours to resolve the incident.
Shortly after 8 a.m. the suspect surrendered himself to officers without incident.
While the barricading was taking place, police learned there was a second man inside the same suite who had also barricaded himself inside. This second man was the subject of conditions that barred him from being at that location due to a serious assault file.
Police continued to work in an effort to end the incident safely but as negotiations continued, officers learned that the second man was a risk of immediate harm.
Officers deployed pepper spray into the suite, which caused the second man to exit the suite. He was taken into custody, cleared medically and transported to cells.
