Victoria police are looking for witnesses after the fishing line was found strung up at neck height on a building in the 1200-block of Johnson Street.

Nathan Forbes, a resident, noticed the wire while pulling his vehicle out of the carport around 7:20 a.m. on Oct. 1.

“I noticed a glint in the windshield, which I thought was a reflection from the sun but I stepped out and realized there was a bunch of fishing line caught on my car,” he said.

Forbes traced the translucent line from one side of the carport, tied to a fence on one side and wrapped around a hedge on the other. He noticed more strung across the front entrance of his building, along with a neighbouring building’s driveway and walkway.

“Judging from the amount of line I cut down if I had to guess there would have been 100 to 150 feet of wire,” he said. “It was almost impossible to see.”

Police determined the line was put up sometime between Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

In August, police were notified about two separate incidents involving translucent fishing wire.

On Aug. 20 police found a series of “trip wires” strung up across stairs and between trees in Cecilia Ravine Park and on Aug. 26, more was found running across a dock ramp near Regatta Landing, just off the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.

“We’re not sure these incidents are related, but we’re also not sure they aren’t. This is certainly concerning for us, which is why we are asking anyone with information to be in touch with us,” said Bowen Osoko, spokesperson for VicPD, adding that police aren’t sure if this was an attempt to harm someone.

Forbes said he wasn’t aware of the other incidents until after he found the line at his apartment, adding this is the first time anything like this has happened in the neighbourhood.

Anyone with information is asked to call VicPD’s non-emergency line at 250-995-7654.
