Updated: Woman arrested in Revelstoke Tim Hortons for allegedly refusing to wear a mask

Revelstoke RCMP issued a $230 ticket

  • Dec. 10, 2020 12:00 a.m.

A woman was arrested after allegedly refusing to wear a mask and causing a disturbance in the Revelstoke Tim Hortons.

On Dec. 6, RCMP attended a call just before 5:30 a.m. after a 43-year-old woman refused requests from business staff to wear a mask and then refused to leave the building.

When police explained the COVID-19 regulations the woman continued to refuse to comply and was arrested.

She was later released from police custody, outside of the restaurant and ordered to appear in Revelstoke Provincial Court. She was also issued a $230 violation ticket for failing to wear a mask and abusive/belligerent behaviour and was ordered not to attend the location of the incident.

Sgt. Chris Dodds said the incident was the first in Revelstoke where a ticket was issued under B.C.’s COVID-19 Related Measures Act. The police have approximately responded to 10 calls related to the province’s health restrictions since March for social gatherings and wearing masks.

“Mostly we’ve been successful with educating people,” he said.

The police said it appeared the accused had been staying in Revelstoke and was not travelling through the city at the time of the incident.

She is scheduled to appear in Revelstoke provincial court on Feb. 3, 2021.

Dr. Bonnie Henry made masks mandatory in all public indoor and retail spaces on Nov. 19. Conditions such as avoiding non-essential travel and group gatherings have been extended until Jan. 8.
