A decades-old project is making headway in Uplands.
Oak Bay issued a request for proposals for the pre-design work for the Uplands Combined Sewer Separation Project on March 20 and a dozen proponents met March 26. Three proposals were submitted by the April 17 deadline – Associated Engineering (BC) Ltd., McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. and WSP Canada Inc. McElhanney’s bid of $160,815 plus GST for a total of $168,855.75 got the OK from council May 11.
The 2015 budget and financial plan bylaw include this project, and the proposed cost is within the budgeted amount. The funding will come from the gas tax money which has been reserved in the Capital Works Reserve Fund.
CREST rep OK’d
Coun. Eric Zhelka, as the Oak Bay director of the CREST Corporation, will continue to attend the corporation’s general meetings and represent the District of Oak Bay as a shareholder for 2015.
BIA nets parking
The Oak Bay Business Improvement Association’s sixth annual sidewalk sale will wrap around Hampshire Road after an OK from council to utilize parking spaces adjacent to Athlone Court.
The Oak Bay Village Spring Sidewalk Sale on May 23 will occupy the parking area on the west side of Hampshire Road between Oak Bay Avenue and the Athlone Court driveway as it has previously.
May 23 marks the second annual Talk to an Expert day and sixth annual Oak Bay Village Spring Sidewalk Sale. The space will be used for food vendors, booths for members that do not have Avenue storefronts and community groups. The booths will face towards the sidewalk as Oak Bay Avenue remains open.
Oak Bay hosts bike station
Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society will host a celebration station at Oak Bay municipal hall on Tuesday, May 26. The station will be set up at approximately 2:45 p.m. and taken-down by 6:30 p.m. The station will be open between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. offering participants free food and beverages, prize draws, bicycle triage services by Oak Bay Bikes and the opportunity to connect and build community.
As has been done in past years, Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society will provide insurance, with $2 million liability.
Greater Victoria Bike to Work Week has grown to be one of the region’s landmark spring events. In a recent survey, participants ranked celebration stations in the top three ‘most enjoyed’ aspects of Bike to Work Week.
Bowker gets brush ready
The annual artists event in Oak Bay to wrap Arts and Culture Week got the go-ahead from council May 11.
The Oak Bay Community Artists Society will fill the Bowker Creek area from Armstrong Road to Hampshire Road with artists for the Bowker Creek Brush-Up Art Show on Aug. 16.
As usual, the group must provide appropriate public liability insurance and pay all invoices from the municipality for costs incurred in connection with the event.
Councillors give notice
Two councillors gave a heads-up there could be a couple of interesting conversations at the next council meeting slated for May 25 at municipal hall.
Coun. Erik Zhelka put forward a notice of motion that he will craft something to suggest Oak Bay invite the Urban Wildlife Stewardship Society, a newly formed Oak Bay group, to provide council with information.
Coun. Kevin Murdoch plans to craft something to formally ask the government to have Oak Bay looped in on any amalgamation discussion in the region.
