Uplands soup lunch helps those in need

Oak Bay resident Shirley Hunter and a dozen other volunteers try to fill a need for Medewiwin Apartment residents

Everyone needs to be connected to someone else. That can be particularly hard if you have fallen on hard times and burned your familial bridges.

Oak Bay resident Shirley Hunter and a dozen other volunteers try to fill that void for a group of residents of an Esquimalt supported housing facility by buying groceries or helping with basic daily tasks.

To afford purchases for the residents, Hunter hosts an annual soup lunch at her Uplands home.

“The soups are amazing and I can tell you that because I don’t make any of them,” Hunter says with a laugh. Furniture is pushed back to the walls so her Norfolk Road home can accommodate as many as possible for the lunch which includes a variety of soups and breads made by volunteers.

Tickets, $50, are not tax deductible but all proceeds from the gathering go toward helping out residents of Pacifica Housing’s Medewiwin Apartment. Medewiwin is a 26-unit independent, supported housing complex for formerly homeless and homeless at risk Victoria residents, in Esquimalt. For tickets and directions or to donate (tax receipt provided for latter) call Hunter at 250-592-8552.
