The Valley Street Rods’ annual show and shine at Harbour Quay traditionally kicks off Thunder in the Valley. This year’s event is slated for Friday, Aug. 8, says spokesman Dave Russell.
Russell is one of about a dozen members that make up the Valley Street Rods. He will have his distinctive red 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu ragtop at the Harbour Quay show and shine. It is one of two classics Russell owns, the other being a Studebaker that he spent 10 years restoring.
The show can accommodate up to 200 vehicles, and about half of those that will show up will be from out of town, he said.
“The reason we do this is lots of drag racers show up on Thursday…they don’t have much to do. We did the car show so they would have something to do Friday night before the drag races.”
The event, which has been going on for 15 or so years, used to be held at Victoria Quay until it grew too large, and was moved to Harbour Quay. There is still room to expand into the train station parking lot, Russell said.
No pre-registration is necessary for people wanting to enter their vehicles in the show. Registration is $15 per car, with proceeds going to the MS Society. Trophies will be handed out for a number of classes. Food, music and door prizes are also planned.
Admission is free for spectators.
Cars can start lining up at 4 p.m. and the show kicks off at 5 p.m. Russell expects it to wrap up at 8 p.m.
