Continued vandalism is putting a popular program at Charles Bloom Secondary in Lumby in jeopardy.
Vandalism to the forestry woodlot on Deafies Creek Forest Service Road is an ongoing problem.
This past week, thieves stole a significant amount of cut timber from the site, and vandalized the remaining logs by cutting into them.
The RCMP say the CBSS forestry program relies on the logs for self-funding, and the program could be in trouble if the thefts and vandalism continue.
“There is some truth to that,” said CBSS principal Ken Gatzke. “We’ve got a program that is all about 21st century learning, the kids love it, Shad Mailer does a great job teaching it and we rely on log sales to provide such a program.”
There are 16 Grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in the school’s forestry program, one that Gatzke said prepares the students well for employment, including such job areas as forestry management.
“It’s a tremendous program,” he added.
Police will increase patrols in the area.
