Quick work by Vavenby firefighters on Thursday afternoon put out a grassfire that was dangerously close to the village of Vavenby as well as Canfor’s sawmill.

The fire was located near the junction of the CN mainline and a spur-line that serves the sawmill.

Clearwater Fire Department was notified but did not attend as it was outside their coverage area.

The Canfor sawmill is one of the area’s major employers.

No cause has been announced for the fire.

The forest fire danger rating for Clearwater is now at extreme. Vavenby’s would be the same.
