On Wednesday, June 29, the last day of school, Vavenby Primary School held a Celebration of Learning.

The first item on the agenda was for each student to stand up and read their ” I Am ” poem. To write the poems the students put down the first word that came to mind to a given question.

Three children, Hunter Chrystall, Landon Hewlett, and Nathaniel Weber, read short stories that they had made up.

Several thank you cards, made by the children and signed by the class, were handed out to those in the audience. The thank yous were for various reasons, such as driving the class to different events or supervising them at lunch.

Michelle Farris, the substitute teacher when Katie Clark was on maternity leave, received one for teaching the class, and teacher assistant Mrs. Biagioni, was given a card to thank her for all her hugs. Biagioni will be working at Raft River School next year. She says that she will miss the Vavenby students.

There was a mini graduation for the three Grade 3 children – Mercedes Flegel, Hunter Chrystall, and Brayden Busse – who will be passing on to Raft River School next fall. In her speech, an emotional Clark said that she had taught these students every year that she had been at the school and had seen them grow up. They were like family and now leaving.

Previously the grads had written down answers to given questions such as what their favourite subject/subjects was/were, favourite memory, etc. Their answers were read aloud by Clark when she presented each graduate with a certificate.

The last item on the agenda was the Gallery Walk in the hallway. The students’ desks were set in front of their lockers with their short stories, art work, ” I Am ” poems, and other materials on top. Posted on their lockers was a research assignment that each child did on a place of their choice.

Last potluck until fall

On Wednesday, June 29, Vavenby Christian Church held its monthly community potluck lunch. It was a hot day but nice and cool in the church. Many people have already started on holidays so the next lunch will not be until Wednesday, Oct. 26, 11 – 2.

Write it down on your calendar and come on out for a good social time.

Kids go to Kamloops

On Monday, June 27, the Vavenby primary class went on its last field trip of the year. They went by bus to Kamloops to the Big Little Science Center to learn about light. Two classes from Raft River School went with them.

Then they all went to the Canada Games pool to swim.
