Vancouver resident Pat Maase spotted what he thought was the start of a potentially troubling fire, driving down the Coquihalla Connector Friday night.
Maase said there was thick grey smoke billowing out of a canyon near Trepanier Road around 8:30 p.m.
“It was down a big canyon and there was a lot of smoke coming out of there,” said Maase. “I couldn’t quite see what was burning but it was in a largely forested area.”
Maase reported the fire to the BC Wildfire Service, using the *5555 service on his cell phone.
“She asked if it could be a campfire or a house fire,” he said. “I couldn’t see. It could have been a house or a vehicle. It was that much smoke. Much bigger than a campfire.”
