A vehicle went through a fence toward Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s helipad this afternoon.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to a call at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, after a sport-utility vehicle broke through the fence along Boundary Avenue that surrounds the hospital’s air ambulance landing pad.
The woman driving the Honda SUV was reportedly helped into the hospital by an ambulance crew who spotted the crash as they were driving by.
Emergency personnel at the scene said the driver might have been having medical difficulties and was trying to get to the hospital when her car went off the road.
The helipad was closed temporarily until debris from the fence and vehicle that could be kicked up by a helicopter’s rotor wash was cleared from the landing area.
