Venues for the 2012 B.C. Winter Games in Greater Vernon are a go.
Games society directors visited Vernon and the local organizing committee on May 28 for an update on the local progress, as well as a tour of the facilities that will be used during the event slated for Feb. 23-26, 2012.
“Everything passed, there were no problems or concerns,” said Jack Yamaoka, director of sport for the local organizing committee.
Provincial Games representatives were given an overview from each of the board chairs on the local committee, then taken on a tour of the venues.
It’s expected an estimated 2,800 volunteers will be involved in the Winter Games, which will see athletes, coaches and officials involved in 18 sports.
The only events taking place outside of Vernon will be held in Armstrong, including speed skating at the Nor-Val sports centre and karate at Pleasant Valley Secondary School.
Sports in Vernon will include the likes of archery (Vernon Secondary), badminton (Fulton Secondary), girl’s hockey (Wesbild Centre), curling (Vernon Curling Club), gymnastics (Priest Valley Gymnasium), judo (Kalamalka Secondary), netball (Seaton Secondary), figure skating (Priest Valley Arena) and ringette (Civic Arena).
Silver Star and the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre will host the skiing events.
