Vernon develops timeline for budget

Council approved a 2015 budget timeline process Monday.

It’s undetermined if Vernon taxpayers will be paying more next year.

Council approved a 2015 budget timeline process Monday.

“There are new issues we have to look at because we have taken control of local parks. I am thinking in particular of lake accesses,” said Coun. Juliette Cunningham.

Funding for roads, sewer and sidewalks will also be considered.

“We will look at addressing the infrastructure deficit,” said Cunningham.

An unknown is where taxes will increase.

“We have to take into consideration the taxpayers. We look at every line in the budget,” said Cunningham.

Coun. Bob Spiers won’t speculate on the outcome of the budget process.

“Hopefully we will keep taxes down to a minimum,” he said. “Hopefully we won’t see any big staff changes in terms of new numbers.”

Administration will present an overall budget package to council Dec. 12 and there will be a detailed budget review from Jan. 14 to 16.

The process will include the incumbent councillors elected Saturday — Cunningham, Spiers, Brian Quiring and Catherine Lord — as well as new mayor Akbal Mund and new councillors Scott Anderson and Dalvir Nahal.
