Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation was thrilled to announce that they raised $350,284 through their 2018 Light A Bulb Campaign, far exceeding the goal of $275,000.

This total marks the highest amount raised in the 31-year history of the Light A Bulb campaign.

“We are completely blown away by the response this year and want to sincerely thank each and everyone who contributed to Light A Bulb,” says Kevin Arbuckle, 2018 Light A Bulb Campaign Chair.

“You have brought us closer to completing this important campaign and improving timely access to surgery for thousands of people throughout the North Okanagan. Through your generosity, we will be able to purchase two new anaesthetic machines. This is a major accomplishment.”

Funds raised through the 2018 Light A Bulb Campaign are going towards the purchase of new state-of-the-art anaesthesia machines at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. This is a part of VJH Foundation’s larger campaign, OPERATION: Surgical Care for Life, which is raising $3.6 million to equip an additional operating room, purchase six anaesthetic machines, and a new urology table with real-time imaging.

After exceeding their Light A Bulb fundraising goal, they will be able to buy two of the six needed anaesthetic machines, bringing them closer to their total campaign goal.

“OPERATION: Surgical Care for Life will give VJH surgeons the ability to perform more surgeries, ultimately reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes so loved ones can get on the road to recovery much sooner,” VJHF said in a release.

“The Vernon Jubilee Hospital Foundation offers our deepest appreciation to all of the individuals, businesses, and organizations that generously supported the 31st annual Light A Bulb Campaign.”

Light a Bulb began 31 years ago when VJH Board member, Daphne Thuillier, spearheaded a campaign to raise funds for a heart monitoring system for the ICU and Emergency Department at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Part of the fundraising campaign included a ‘Light A Bulb’ promotion, where a gift of $20 would light a bulb on a tree outside the hospital.

Since then, Light A Bulb has raised more than $5 million through community donations to support health care in the North Okanagan.
