No one will go without this Christmas thanks to the generosity of North Okanagan residents.
Vernon’s Upper Room Mission has been overwhelmed with 700 backpacks although there were only about 50 donated as of Dec. 12.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” said Lisa Anderson, director of resource development.
“I was concerned about backpacks not coming in but then they started rolling in.”
In some cases, businesses and groups were dropping off 30 to 50 backpacks at once.
Among the items in the backpacks are toques, gloves, socks, notepads, toiletry items, candy, crossword puzzles and gift cards.
About 300 backpacks will be handed out during URM’s Christmas dinner today at 4 p.m.
“The children’s ones have been put aside for the kids,” said Anderson.
“Everyone will get something.”
As for the excess, some will be given to Teen Junction to distribute and URM will give out the rest during 2017.
“The community has always supported us and thank you for thinking of our clients. It means the world to them,” said Anderson.
