Vernon motorists urged to lock out crime

Several thefts from vehicles have taken place over the past couple days

Crimes of opportunity are being left unlocked around downtown Vernon.

Several thefts from vehicles have taken place over the past couple days which has RCMP warning motorists to lock out auto crime.

“They are not locking them (vehicles) and leaving valuables out in open in them,” said Const. Chad Gravelle.

While there were a couple incidents both Wednesday and Thursday, Gravelle says it is just the routine crimes that occur with extra people around town during the summer months.

“It just happens every year, there’s an influx of people in the summer.”

According to BaitCar.com, the vast majority of car thieves are drug addicts.

“They steal cars and trucks so that they can commit other crimes in order to raise cash to buy more drugs,” the website reads.

The top 10 most commonly stolen items are: smartphones, personal electronics (tablets, laptops, ipods, GPS), work tools, credit cards and identification, stereo equipment, cash and change, car parts and accessories, garage door openers, sunglasses and keys.
