Vernon politician wants amalgamation debate to end

Coun. Catherine Lord pushes for study but not convinced merger is the best

Some Vernon politicians are calling for an amalgamation study to end the debate once and for all.

Some Vernon politicians are calling for an amalgamation study to end the debate once and for all.

A Vernon politician insists the amalgamation issue can’t be ignored.

Coun. Catherine Lord told her colleagues Monday that the city should ask the provincial government to initiate a study into possibly merging Vernon with Coldstream and Areas B and C.

“A study may lay things to rest once and for all,” she said, adding that the topic surfaces every few years.

But while she favours a study, Lord says she is not endorsing amalgamation.

“I have done reading on areas that have amalgamated and it hasn’t always been successful,” she said.

Council did not make any decisions Monday as it will receive a presentation from the Society for the Future Governance of Greater Vernon in January. The society recently led a petition campaign pushing for a restructure study.
