The crosswalk at the intersection of Vernon and Stanley streets in Nelson, down from the Hume Hotel, is used by over 200 people daily, but suffers from poor visibility — something that’s now being addressed by an in-progress construction project.
“The goal of the project is to improve pedestrian visibility at this location,” Ministry of Transportation district engineer Ryan Oakley told the Star.
“Pedestrian visibility is important for motorists to have enough time to see that a pedestrian is waiting to or actively crossing the road, react, and bring their vehicle to a safe stop.”
Oakley said they’re implementing improvements including bump-outs on both sides of the highway and an overhead LED sign. There will also be median street lighting and sidewalk let-downs to help people with wheelchairs or strollers.
The contract value for the project is $214,000 and will be shared between the Ministry of Transportation and the City of Nelson.
Maglio Installations of Castlegar was the successful bidder on the project.
