It took 11 hours, but a domestic disturbance in Vernon ended peacefully Friday morning.

Vernon RCMP responded to an incident Thursday at 6 p.m. in the 7800 block of Pleasant Valley Road.

“There were three people in the place at the time,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “Two people – a man and a woman – left the house voluntarily, leaving the suspect as the lone occupant.”

Officers made contact with the 41-year-old man inside the home. He repeatedly told police he had knives and would stab police if they entered the home.

He then warned he would harm himself.

Molendyk said the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and claimed to have self-inflicted knife wounds on his hand and arm.

RCMP negotiators as well as members of the South East District Emergency Response Team were called in to assist.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Friday, the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

His injuries were found to be limited to a small cut on his hand. He was taken to Vernon hospital for treatment and examination.

Asked if the suspect was known to police, Molendyk said, “We have had contact with him, yes.”

Pleasant Valley Road was closed to traffic as police dealt with the incident.

Charges are being considered as investigators continue to work on this case.
