Vernon still seeks new welcome signs

Attempts to build welcome signs are moving ahead again in Vernon

Attempts to build welcome signs are moving ahead again in Vernon.

The city will issue a second round of request for proposals for three gateway signs after the initial process led to one bid that was $200,000, far above the $55,000 budgeted.

“Hopefully we’ll have an affordable project,” said Coun. Scott Anderson.

City staff reached out to potential bidders about the low response and project costs and their feedback will be incorporated into the new request for proposals.

The current budget for construction and installation of the signs remains $55,000.

Public process proceeds

The City of Vernon will pursue companies interested in providing public engagement web tools.

“Public engagement web tools will help staff seek out and facilitate the involvement of those members of the public potentially affected by or interested in a decision,” said Tanya Laing Gahr, communications officer.

“And it will enhance the city’s ability to reach a broad spectrum of Vernon residents in order to gather meaningful data to inform decisions made by council.”

In addition to web tools, the City will use other face-to-face methods of engaging the public that consider different demographics, accessibility, locations, language and cultural differences.

Mural project shot down

The City of Vernon won’t take part in a project celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.

Council has decided not to participate in the National Mural created by Canada’s Communities Celebrating 150 years.

“Administration doesn’t have time to co-ordinate such a project,” said Will Pearce, chief administrative officer.

The city would have had to organize up to 600 volunteers and provide between $12,500 and $15,000.
