The stars are going to shine in the North Okanagan.

The City of Vernon has revealed that a Celebrity Sports Invitational is planned for Predator Ridge and Sparkling Hill resorts in September.

““In the past, people like Alec Baldwin, Glenn Close and Robin Williams have attended,” said Michelle Jefferson, Vernon’s tourism manager, of previous events in places such as Banff.

Between 15 to 25 stars could be expected for the invitational, which would feature golf and some water activities, and be aired on Fox TV and syndicated to other networks.

“Entertainment Tonight Canada always comes,” said Jefferson.

Also anticipated to be in Vernon is Robert Kennedy Jr. as the  event raises funds for the Waterkeepers Alliance, an organization he is involved in.

“There could be an opportunity for a local water alliance to get involved,” said Jefferson.

On Monday, Vernon council agreed to spend $50,000 towards the Celebrity Sports Invitational, with another $50,000 coming from Kelowna.

“Vernon will be more of the star of the show,” said Jefferson.

Vernon was selected as the site because Holly J. Wood, who has organized previous invitationals, now lives in the area.

“She decided this is where this needs to be,” said Jefferson.
