Just in time for Remembrance Day, those who served in the military are getting a nod of respect in Chilliwack.
Signs are going up shortly in three spots around Chilliwack to reserve one parking stall in each location just for veterans.
Chilliwack council approved the veterans only parking Tuesday at: Evergreen Hall, Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre and Twin Rinks.
Mayor Sharon Gaetz credited resident Jim Newton for the idea.
“It was his vision, and it is our pleasure to assist,” said Gaetz in council chambers Tuesday.
Coun. Chris Kloot noted it was a small gesture that could have a big impact.
The signs feature the Canadian flag above text that reads: “Veteran Parking Only must have veteran plates – Thank You for your Service”
The parking stalls will be monitored by city staff to see if they’re well used, and the decision to go ahead with the idea was substantiated by the fact that there is sufficient parking in each of these areas to dedicate them in this way. No handicapped parking spaces were used.
