While the winter season has many people thinking of donating jackets and coats, another ongoing need also exists.

This week the Period Posse started a 10-day campaign to fundraise for menstrual products for people who can’t afford them. Menstrual products are a pricey necessity and cost an average of $18,000 over a lifetime.

“These products often aren’t donated to social services, so if you wanted to donate something different you could do this,” said Lindsay Shaw, founder of the Period Posse. “Periods aren’t always polite to talk about, but there’s a huge need.”

Tampons, pads, cups, clean underwear and cash are being accepted at locations across the city, including at The Zone 91.3, Coastline Surf & Sport, Ollie Quinn, Hide + Seek Coffee, Moka House (Fort Street location), Victoria Health Unit, Saanich Health Unit, Lore General Store, Little Gold and Good News.

The Period Posse is hoping to fundraise $10,000 worth of products. Donations will be dispersed through several social services across Victoria, including Cool Aid, the 1up Single Parent Resource Centre, the Sandy Merriman House, Rock Bay Landing, SOLID, and several youth groups.

“We really truly accept anything,” Shaw said, “There’s such a huge need, we have social services reaching out all the time.”
