A 34-year-old Victoria man suffered lacerations to his face during an unprovoked attack in the 500-block of Ellice St. Friday evening.

The violent incident was caught by a surveillance camera, said Bowen Osoko, Victoria Police Department spokesman.

“Officers were stunned to see one man reach into his backpack and retrieve a metal object – either a metal bar or a knife – and begin beating another man about the head and face,” Osoko said.

The unprovoked assault continued for ten to fifteen seconds, he said.

An off-duty VicPD officer recognized the suspect at the corner of Yates and Blanshard streets around 5 p.m. Saturday and called for back-up.

The victim was treated and released from hospital with minor injuries.

A 23-year-old man was arrested and faces assault charges.
