Victoria NDP MP Denise Savoie came ever-so-close to becoming Speaker of the House of Commons Thursday.
Andrew Scheer, a 32-year-old conservative MP from Saskatchewan, claimed the title after six rounds of voting by MPs. Scheer was chosen out of eight candidates.
Both Scheer and Savoie had exoerience as deputy Speaker in the previous Parliament.
Scheer replaces Peter Milliken, who retired from politics.
While the Speaker’s job comes with a lot of responsibilities, it also has many benefits including an annual salary of more than $200,000, an apartment on Parliament Hill, a historic house in the Gatineau Hills, a car and driver and a large hospitality budget.
