Low average incomes have made Victoria one of the worst cities to work in 2019.
According to a survey conducted by B.C. Business, Victoria ranks in 36th place out of 46 B.C. cities examined for the best cities for work.
Factors examined included household income, average shelter spending, spending on recreation, and value of primary real estate.

In 2018, Victoria ranked number seven, but the sharp drop was due in part from the lowest average income for residents under the age of 35, and also a change in survey methodology that separated the Capital Region’s municipalities, so higher income areas like Oak Bay didn’t offset the numbers.

Coming in at number one this year was Squamish, which top the list for a second time in three years. This is thanks in part to the town’s proximity to Whistler and North Vancouver, and due to its rising income, extra spending on recreation and a population influx. It is also one of the busiest areas for housing construction.
