Fire broke out in large waste piles near the Interfor sawmill the afternoon of Tuesday, April 30 near Castlegar, causing a considerable amount of smoke. Crews from Castlegar, Robson and the mill were assisted by two helicopters with buckets. Castlegar fire chief Gerry Rempel said there is no word on the cause and that no burning has been taking place in the area. He added crews will set up sprinklers and a bulldozer will turn the area over to ensure the fire is fully extinguished. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.
