No injuries reported in Saturday afternoon blaze

No injuries were suffered as a result of a Saturday afternoon fire that forced evacuation of a Langley City multiple unit residential and commercial building in the 5500-block of 203rd Street, but occupants of three suites had to find other, temporary accommodation.

Langley City Fire Rescue deputy fire chief Scott Kennedy told the Langley Advance Times crews responded to the call around 3 p.m. Saturday, June 5 and arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the balcony of a third floor suite overlooking the parking lot in the rear of the building.

Kennedy said the building sprinkler system had activated, and crews were able to knock the flames down quickly, then entered the building to completely extinguish the fire.

He described smoke and water damage to the suite as “significant,” as well as nearby residential suites and some first-floor businesses.

The first floor of the building is occupied by businesses, while the upper three are residential.

Langley Emergency Service workers did respond to assist residents displaced from the “un-occupiable” suites, but it appeared they were able to make their own arrangements, Kennedy said.

Cause of the blaze is under investigation.
