Public health officials outline Ebola response protocol, video shows negative pressure room in Surrey Memorial Hospital

VIDEO: Fraser Health officials discuss Ebola preparation

Fraser Health has released a series of videos aimed at addressing public concern about the deadly Ebola virus and shedding further light on the health region’s preparations.

The video above depicts the use of a negative pressure room in Surrey Memorial Hospital’s critical care tower.  It doesn’t show the actual personal protective equipment that would be used, which provincial officials say will include full body suits to cover the entire body, as well as face shields and N95 respirator masks.

Below, acting chief medical health officer Dr. Victoria Lee and Dr. Elizabeth Brodkin, Fraser’s executive medical director of infection control, discuss what’s been learned from the experience elsewhere in the world as well as Fraser’s expected handling of any further suspect cases that may surface here.

Surrey Memorial is the Lower Mainland’s designated referral hospital for suspected and confirmed Ebola cases.

“We are watching and learning from what is happening around the world – refining our protocols and procedures to ensure our staff and the people we serve are as safe as possible for the unlikely event that an Ebola case arrives in Fraser Health,” Lee said.
