Fire at house on Plecas Road in South Wellington area

  • Mar. 1, 2018 12:00 a.m.

Fire crews from the Nanaimo area battled a house fire on Plecas Road in the South Wellington area.

The fire broke out shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, March 1, and was described as a full mutual aid fire with response from Cranberry, North Cedar, Extension and North Oyster volunteer fire departments.

Firefighters were hampered by strong winds and a shortage of water, which had to be trucked in to the home’s rural location from Cranberry Fire Hall in South Wellington and Nanaimo Airport and in spite of efforts to battle the blaze, the house was a total loss.

Firefighters were still on scene more than five hours later soaking down hot spots.

All occupants escaped and are safe and there are no reported injuries, according to witnesses.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.
