A weekend blaze that injured three people and damaged four houses in Aldergrove was likely caused by “outdoor cooking,” investigators believe.

Langley Township Deputy Fire Chief Russ Jenkins they have narrowed down the cause of the original fire in one of the houses.

“It looks like there was some form of outdoor cooking that spread,” Jenkins told the Langley Advance Times.

“Something got out of hand.”

Jenkins said statements from the residents and multiple 911 calls said “similar things.”

One of the residents, Laura McFarland, reported hearing “three bangs at the very back.”

Then, McFarland said “the tree in the corner of the house caught on fire and that basically spread over to my house, and within a few seconds the whole balcony was on fire and a few minutes [after that it] started coming inside our house.”

Crews arrived on the scene at 9:26 a.m. on Saturday,April 20, in response to multiple calls about a residential structure fire blaze on Springfield Drive near Davis Crescent.

Three people were taken to hospital, two for treatment of smoke inhalation and one for minor burns suffered trying to put out a fire.

Two of the houses were damaged beyond repair, while two suffered exposure damage to their exteriors.

More than a dozen people were displaced.
