The River Forecast Centre has downgraded the Somass River to a flood watch (it had elevated to flood warning late Friday), as the Alberni Valley enjoyed a break from the heavy rain on Saturday.
The Tseshaht First Nation has still declared its reserve land along the Somass River a state of emergency, and several homes were evacuated last night, according to Tseshaht emergency preparedness committee chair Hugh Braker.
Tseshaht Chief councillor Cynthia Dick released a statement on social media Saturday afternoon letting people know that all homes along the Somass threatened by flooding have now been sandbagged.
Numerous volunteers came out Friday night to the Tseshaht Administration Building to fill sandbags, including Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns.
No weather warnings are in effect for the area from Environment Canada, which is calling for a 40 per cent chance of rain on Sunday for the Port Alberni area.
