A five-car crash on the Alex Fraser Bridge Sunday night left a taxi sitting on top of another car.

It happened around 8:45 p.m. in the northbound centre lane. According to Const. Mike Halskov with BC RCMP traffic services, the accident was indirectly caused by a stalled vehicle part way up the bridge deck.

“A vehicle traveling some distance behind came across the stall, applied his brakes and stopped, and that caused a five-car chain reaction collision that strangely did not involve the vehicle that had stalled,” Halskov said. “It looked very dramatic because we had the one car ending up on top of the other one … however injuries, thankfully, were minor and the road was quickly cleared by Deas Island Traffic, Delta Fire and BC Ambulance.”

Weather is believed to have been a factor in the collision.

“It was raining quite heavily and this person stalled and people just came upon it unexpectedly,” Halskov said.

Halskov advised the public when they’re out driving in bad weather conditions to slowdown, give themselves a lot of extra room with the vehicles in front of them and make sure their windshield is in good condition and not fogged up.

As well, before setting out, drivers should check that they’ve got good wiper blades and that their headlights are all working properly.
