One of Canada’s worst mass murders will be remembered.

There will be a candlelight vigil Thursday outside of the Vernon library to recall the nine members of the Gakhal and Saran families who died in their Okanagan Avenue home April 5, 1996.

“The Gakhal family invites the community to attend this memorial to help honour the lives of those killed, to support the survivors and to be mindful of the potentially devastating impact of violence against women in relationships,” said Debby Hamilton, with the Vernon Women’s Transition House.

“After the vigil, you are invited to meet and support the surviving family members and to share an Indian meal provided by the Gakhal family and friends.”

The nine victims were murdered by an estranged relative.

The vigil gets underway at 6 p.m. in front of the library.
