The budget features recommended items along with suggestions the public would like to see take place.
Public Works recommendations
Sidewalks: $40,000
The village has received approval for the Downtown Revitalization Project. Replacement of the sidewalks ties in with the project. The plan is to replace the first block of the sidewalk in the fall.
Drainage
Two areas within village limits have been deemed to need some form of drainage. The first is at Alexander/Cotswold Road for the installation of a 200-meter culvert to direct storm water from Cotswold Road to Highway 6. The cost is estimated at $25,000.
The second area requiring drainage is the alley behind NAPA Auto. The village would like to tie the manhole on the NAPA property into the downtown storm drain network. The cost is estimated to be $10,000.
Some suggestions from villagers include streetlights at the north end of 15th Avenue NW and on Churchill Road, and a sidewalk from 1st Avenue NW to 4th Avenue NW.
Water
The village has received the grant to help fund the replacement of the two-inch galvanized water pipes. The budget to replace the pipes now stands at $104,690.
The membranes of the water treatment plant are also being replaced. The membranes last between three and 10 years. The membranes at the treatment plant have reached the three-year point the village wants to be ready for when they do need to be replaced. Budget for the project is estimated to be $85,000.
Sewer
Recommendations for sewer work are the de-sludging and dewatering at the Waste Water Treatment Plant.
The de-sludging is to clean the lagoons at the plant because of the high volume of sludge in them. Budget for the project is estimated to be $150,000.
The dewatering options and compost mix are options for a long-term solution for dealing with sludge at the treatment plant. Budget for the project is estimated to be $20,000.
Nakusp Hot Springs
A number of items at the hot springs have been recommended for this year’s budget.
They include improvements to the point-of-sale system, front counter renovations, a chalet water feed separator, tile replacement in the change rooms, replacement of the tables and chairs in the lobby and the addition of a coffee bar, campground fence repair, and upgrades to the washroom counters and sinks. The total for these repairs and improvements comes to $57,500.
Arena and Parks
There is also a long list of recommendations for the Arena and Parks portion of the budget this year.
These recommendations include a replacement for the auto scrubber at the sports complex, backflow preventers, the resurfacing of the tennis courts, upgrades to playground equipment at Rotary Park, improvements to the Rail Bed Trails, work on the Spicer Gardens, and new signage at the Nakusp Cemetery. The estimated budget for these projects totals $159,500.
Suggestions from residents include improving the shower building at the municipal campground and the installation of a welcoming sign kiosk that includes a map and bulletin board for community notices.
Administration
Village administration is in need of a new computer server. The last one was bought in 2008. These servers have a lifespan of about 10 years. The estimated budget is about $10,000.
