Community members and Village officials celebrated a new pump station on the Miami River Dike Friday, in time for June’s spring freshet.
The pump station, which involved a total rebuild of the existing flood pump facility, is the first of its kind in Canada and part of the Flood Protection Project sponsored in part by Emergency Management BC.
Two parallel screw pumps were installed, costing a total of $1.920-million.
Benefits of the new pump station include a reduction in fish mortality to less than 2.5 per cent, a reduction in operational costs, and flood protection.
Now that the infrastructure is complete, the Village plans to partner with Tourism Harrison to redevelop the construction site into a welcoming green space with seating, native plantings and interpretive signage to provide information about this innovative pumping system and about the unique riparian habitat.
An application to the Provincial Rural Dividend Fund has gone forward in support of this final component of the Miami River Pump Station Project.
