Residents are encouraged to walk this way after council approved the installation of a pedestrian shoulder along Kappel Street East.

Esther DeGraw presented council with a petition requesting a walkway and, after assessing the situation, operations manager Joe McCulloch recommended going ahead with a one-metre wide asphalt shoulder between Alder and Dogwood avenues as the road is wide enough there to accommodate the walkway as well as two 3.5-metre-wide traffic lanes.

He also noted, however, that it is anticipated that Kappel, as an important connecting route in town, will be fully redeveloped in a sizeable capital improvement project in the future.

“I appreciate that Mr. Parliament (town manager) took the time to call me and also delivered the letters to the council, the mayor and Mr. McCulloch who have been to visit and explain what is planned for the area,” DeGraw wrote in a letter of appreciation. “We look forward to soon having a temporary solution to the matter with full repairs and path coming.”

Council unanimously approved the recommendation as a temporary solution to residents’ needs.

“We are moving forward on it,” Mayor Terry Rysz stated, though there isn’t yet a timeline for when the work will take place.
