Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett has announced $10,000 in new funding for the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Invasive Plant Committee to conduct invasive plant surveys and monitor treatment efficiency on Crown land.
“Preventing the spread of invasive plants will help protect native plants species that are vital to our ecosystems,” she says.
Invasive plants harm the environment by crowding out native plants, altering ecosystems and creating an increased wildfire hazard.
They can also affect human health by causing skin irritation, blisters, scarring and severe breathing problems. They can also be inedible or toxic to animals.
Impacting property and crop values, impeding recreational trails and clogging waterways are also among the negative impacts.
