Waste Reduction Week heading to Hazelton

Zero Waste Program Manager for the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Laurie Gallant is working hard to get the word out.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada is coming to the Hazeltons and Zero Waste Program Manager for the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine Laurie Gallant is working hard to get the word out and create special events in the area.

There is The Clean Bin Project, which is a movie that will be showcased at the Tri-Town Theater. Gallant is challenging the audiences to find a buddy and challenge them to a week long contest to see who can make the least amount of garbage, from October 23rd to the 29th. Participants will be given a clear garbage bag and asked to weigh their garbage and submit their weights along with a description of what is inside the bag. The top three challengers will win prizes and all the winners will be published in the paper, along with tips on how they did it. In addition the winners will also get a $20 gift certificate from a Hazelton vendor of their choice.

There will be Paper Recycling collection, Project Eco-Prise approved announcements, Battery and Cell Phone recycling and even Green Halloween tips such as choosing candy with wrappers that can be recycled or composted, or skip the candy all together, make your own costumes,  host a costume swap or even donate your costumes after the party this year.

There are many other great tips such as using LED lights, buying reusable decorations or even using soy or beeswax candles instead of paraffin, which releases toxic chemicals.
