City of Chilliwack crews were busy Thursday morning pumping water out of a ditch on Ashwell Road to prevent localized flooding.
It’s not the first time. It happens whenever heavy rains fill up the ditch that runs parallel along Ashwell near Bernard Avenue on KwawKwawApilt land.
“Crews will continue to monitor water levels and utilize pumps as necessary,” according to Liana Wiebe, communications assistant with City of Chilliwack.
The mobile pump set-up, which had been placed on standby at the site beside the water-filled ditch, had been steadily removing rainwater.

The hoses went around an adjacent business, Stevie’s Automotive Collision and Frame Repair, emptying into a sewer manhole.
Operations crews will monitor the water levels at this location whenever there is a heavy rain event, according to the communications rep, and pump out the excess when necessary.
“There are plans in place to bypass this storm line in the future and the pump was placed on standby in the area in the meantime,” Wiebe added.
