Water plan picking up speed

Planning is well underway for this November’s master water plan referendum in Greater Vernon

Planning is well underway for this November’s master water plan referendum in Greater Vernon.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee is proceeding with a website and advertising to let residents know why there is a need to borrow $70 million for upgrades to the water utility.

“The goal is to keep it simple so people understand what we’re talking about so they can make an informed decision,” said Karmen Morgan, a Regional District of North Okanagan employee.

Opposition has come from director Gyula Kiss, who is concerned with GVAC’s suggestions that the Interior Health Authority could still force the upgrades even if the referendum is shot down.

“I don’t like this idea of what will happen if you don’t approve $70 million. I don’t like to scare people,” he said.

However, chief administrative officer David Sewell says the goal is to be factual.

“We’re not trying to have dire consequences with a no vote. We’re just trying to present information,” he said.

Sports facility on track

Work continues at the site of Greater Vernon’s future community sports field and athletics facility.

“There’s not a lot of visual activity but the contracts are out and the behind the scenes work is being taken care of,” said Keith Pinkoski, Greater Vernon Advisory Committee parks planner.

It’s expected that civil work will begin this week and the construction of various buildings will occur  soon after that.

Pinkoski says the project next to Okanagan College is currently within budget and he is confident that work can be completed by the end of the year.

“We’re shooting for total completion in December and in the spring, opening the facility.”
