Water rates going under the microscope in Chilliwack

City officials issued a request for expressions of interest for engineering services to conduct a $70,000 water rates study.

Chilliwack is seeking a consultant to review its water rates to see if a change could lead to more effective water conservation.

City officials issued a request for expressions of interest for engineering services to conduct a $70,000 study.

In the city documents, it states the water rates have not been restructured for many years.

“Water rate restructuring has been identified as one of the effective water conservation measures in the City’s water conservation plan.”

It implemented a water conservation program to control high summer peaks arising from capacity limitations in the Sardis-Vedder aquifer.

The objective of the study would be to review existing water rates, and conduct a rate study to determine the revenue requirements including capital budgeting, cost of service study to equitably allocate the revenue requirements between the various customer classes, and develop a suitable rate design.

The RFEI for the water rates study closes Sept. 12 at 3 p.m.
