Water rescue off Crescent Beach

Local crew assists boat stuck in sandbar on Sunday

Members of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Unit 5 answered a call for assistance from a grounded boat Sunday.

A 20-foot cabin cruiser was located hard aground a sandbar approximately 800 metres out from the Crescent Beach pier when RCM-SAR 5 arrived before 7:30 p.m.

According to rescue crew, the boat had run aground at 4 p.m., leaving the three occupants stranded.

“The recreational boaters had no local knowledge of the water and were ill-prepared to be on the water, with no marine radio or marine lights, apart from the boat’s running lights,” RCM-SAR 5’s Dean Donelly said in a release.

Once on scene, the rescue team navigated through the shallow waters and at 9 p.m. were able to assist the boaters in freeing themselves, when the tide level rose.
