Water restrictions extended indefinitely in Penticton

Drought conditions force City of Penticton to extend summer water restrictions

It has been a long, hot and dry summer with little rain and the City of Penticton is asking residents to continue conserving water.

The Stage 1 water restrictions normally in place between May 1 and Aug. 31 have been extended indefinitely in response to the Level 3 drought rating declared for the Okanagan by the provincial government.

“With drought conditions expected to continue, the provincial government is encouraging everyone in the region to conserve,” said Len Robson, public works manager.

Under Stage 1 water restrictions,even-numbered street addresses can be irrigated on even-numbered days of the month and odd-numbered street addresses can be irrigated on odd-numbered days of the month. Agricultural users are also asked to reduce their consumption by 30 per cent.

The city is also taking steps to reduce its water use. The Water Treatment Plant is adjusting to use lake water to minimize the draw on mountain reservoirs and park irrigation will be reduced by 30 per cent effective immediately.
