Watering restrictions in Penticton start May 1

Residents will have three days each week for watering

Watering restrictions in Penticton start May 1.

The city issued a reminder to residents that water restrictions will be in place to mitigate problems resulting from any potential drought.

“During this stage, outdoor watering is permitted three days per week, only on assigned days according to your street address,” said water quality supervisor Micheal Firlotte. “This allows the City of Penticton to conserve our water in preparation for warmer, drier months to avoid more severe water restrictions.”

Watering days for odd-numbered street addresses are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday only.

Even-numbered street addresses can water on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday only.

There is no watering on Mondays.

Townhouses and condominiums follow their street address, not their unit address. Only properties in mobile home park zoning use their unit number in place of street address.

Automatic irrigation is permitted to run between 12:01 a.m. to 6 a.m. only on designated days.

Manual irrigation is permitted to run between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. only on designated days.

To reduce your outdoor water use this spring and summer Okanagan WaterWise recommends watering between dusk and dawn, as watering during the coolest part of the day prevents evaporation.

Also recommended is to let grass grow to around 2-3 inches tall (5-8 cm). This slows evaporation from the soil, making it work more effectively.

Other recommendations include watering deeply instead of more often to encourage healthy root growth, and choosing drought-tolerant and other dry climate plants.

Check the Okanagan Xeriscape Association’s Plant Database for a list of WaterWise plants for the Okanagan.
