Early Saturday morning, Elk Valley RCMP officers responded to a break and enter at the Fernie Aquatic Centre.

According to the City of Fernie, the alarms at the centre were triggered after someone shattered the glass door and entered the facility.

Later, RCMP reported the arrest of “one very intoxicated man who was found sleeping inside the office on a cot.”

The break-in resulted in a full closure of the facility on Saturday and staff spent the day repairing damage, draining, cleaning and refilling the leisure pool and hot tub. By Sunday, the facility was reopened to the public.

According to RCMP, the intoxicated man was the lone suspect and has been charged with break and enter with intent to commit mischief. He is expected to appear in court on February 12, 2020.
