Weekly Chilliwack COVID case numbers on the decline

BCCDC reports show 119 cases last week down from 140 the week before that

Chilliwack remains one of B.C.’s COVID hot-spots according to the latest numbers released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

The health organization releases a weekly map showing case counts across the province. For the seven-day period covering Jan. 10 to Jan. 16, Chilliwack had 119 cases, which is down from 140 the week before.

That number by itself isn’t large, but matched against the city’s population (83,790 in the official 2016 census, in the low to mid 90,000s now), it’s one of the province’s higher case counts per 100,000 people.

It works out to be in the range of 15.1-to-20 cases per 100,000 population, placing Chilliwack in the second highest category on the BCCDC map.

By comparison, Langley recorded 64 cases, the Tri-Cities had 90 and Richmond had 67, putting those three municipalities in a lower category than Chilliwack.

That said, Chilliwack’s situation has continued to improve week-over-week since the last report of 140, which was itself below the 156 cases in the week of Dec. 27 to Jan. 2. That put Chilliwack in the highest category of more than 20 cases per 100,000 population. Abbotsford and Surrey continue to remain in that highest category in the province with 207 and 675 cases respectively, numbers that similarly are on the decline week by week.

The BCCDC also has a cumulative map that shows COVID case totals for the entirety of 2020. Chilliwack recorded 1,185 in 2020, Abbotsford 3,377 and Surrey 16,109.
