Welcome back Vikings!

NVSS principal writes letter to parents in Vanderhoof

  • Sep. 4, 2020 12:00 a.m.

I truly hope that this summer was a time spent resting and that everyone is ready to come back to start this new school year! We certainly missed seeing so many of you on a regular basis. It is with great pleasure for me to say – welcome back to Nechako Valley Secondary School everyone!

I would like to also mention a couple of special welcomes: To the Class of 2026 – as our newest grade 7’s enter the MYNVSS wing, we look forward to the energy and curiosity you will bring to the school, you will make us better! Welcome back, as well, to the Class of 2021 who are returning for their final year here at Vike Nation.

It is hard to believe how fast those last 5 years have gone!

I am pleased to introduce some new staff to the Viking Nation. In the MYNVSS wing we are welcoming Ms. Mercedes Ducharme to the Grade 8 team and Mrs. Nicole Lance to the Grade 7 team. Mr. Eldon Kochel, a former NVSS grad will be also teaching in the MYNVSS space as well. Mr. Dagan Ducharme will be our new teacher in the ACE/PEP room. Vikes – please take some time to welcome ALL of our newcomers to our amazing school!

This will be a different year as you know.

We are starting the school year in a Quarter based system for grades 9-12. MYNVSS grades (7/8) will be in a “House” system with their cohorts.

Students will receive an orientation on their first day in the school (see below) as per Ministry of Health guidelines. These are measures that we are taking to ensure student and staff safety as well continuing to offer as many educational opportunities we can for our students. It is important that we are united in making NVSS a safe and positive space for all going forward.

In order for all of us to stay safe – it is important that our students are doing their “Health Checks” prior to coming to school each day. Please go to this link for the health check: https://www.sd91.bc.ca/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1095501&type=d&pREC_ID=1370090

“Anyone experiencing symptoms of illness should not return to school until they have been assessed by a health-care provider to exclude COVID-19 or other infectious diseases AND their symptoms have resolved.”

I would like to extend an invitation to all parents to stay connected with us. We will continue to improve all aspects of our communication home and within the community so that you will know what is upcoming at NVSS.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or Vice-Principal Denise Dowswell at 250-567-2291 when you may have a question, concern or input. So much of what we do at NVSS depends on the input from parents and community – even more so in these different times.

School reopening days are Sept. 10 and 11. Students with last names beginning with A-K will come to orientation and classes on Thursday Sept. 10th.

Students with last names beginning L-Z will come to orientation and classes on Friday Sept. 11th.

Grade 7 students will be met by greeters upon arrival and taken to their area.

Grade 8-12 students will go to Block 1 classes and orientation in the morning and Block 2 classes in the afternoon.

All Students will be in attendance for full days – 5 days a week starting Sept. 14th.

Sincerely,

Ken Young
