Welsh EP release party Saturday at Captain’s Cabin

On The Road launch event gets underway at 8:30 p.m.

A Mission musician is releasing an EP this Saturday at the Captain’s Cabin.

John Welsh’s six-song album, On The Road, has been in the works for about a year.

“It was a solo project, but professional musicians played for it,” he said, including rhythm work from artists who have worked with Langley musician Daniel Wesley.

Welsh describes the music as bits of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, and Bob Marley, plus some newer influences such as the Lumineers.

The occupational therapist by day has been working in Mission for the past nine years, and living here for four.

Welsh recently wrapped up shooting a music video for the single, On The Road. The entire piece was done within a 1979 Volkswagen Westfalia, he said, as he drove down the Lougheed Highway from Mission to Harrison Hot Springs.

The story had Welsh picking up hitchhikers along the road, who were the musicians. But during filming, they spotted a real hitchhiker and decided to pick him up. The man was from Calgary and Welsh said he was “so stoked” to hear he might make the final cut in the video.

Welsh has been performing for more than a decade throughout the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland, and also plays with the Welsh Brothers, Los Amigos and Rhythm and Cello.

The three-set show starts at 8:30 p.m. and Welsh is anticipating a big crowd, so get there early for a seat, he advised. There is no cover. The Captain’s Cabin is located at 33331 Harbour Ave.
