Wembley Road will soon receive $250,000 worth of upgrades.
The Wembley Road Pedestrian and Cycling Safety Improvements will see 1.2 km of shoulder widening on the west side of Wembley Road from the Parksville city boundary to Wright Road, widening of existing bus pullouts along the corridor and a new crosswalk with lighting at the Roberton Boulevard intersection.
“I’m tickled pink,” said RDN chair Joe Stanhope who represents French Creek, of the project. Stanhope had earlier written to the Province regarding the safety issues along the corridor.
The plans for the upgrades were unveiled by Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone and Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell Tuesday.
These improvements are slated for completion in November 2015, according to a news release from the Province.
The Wembley Road project is part of B.C. on the Move, the government’s new 10-year transportation plan that Stone said will touch “all facets of transportation.”
The plan will see $2.5 billion in spending over the next three years. Stone said the mid-Island region will see “many more improvements” during that time. While no specific projects were listed, Stone said the Island would see increased funding for side roads and secondary highways, continued work on major highways and increased funding for infrastructure to support alternative transportation such as cycling.
